Snehprerana Volunteers Project
“Sneh-Prerana” children value addition centers through volunteers Sneh-Prerana is a group of youth, who are voluntary conducting value addition centers in the various communities. These youth are the past beneficiaries of the Snehdeep sponsorship Programme. Snehdeep has helped them financially and morally in their educational period who overcome their adverse situations with this help. They are successfully completing their career. At the same time as a token of gratitude they are returning what they have received by offering their services.
Snehdeep Jankalyan Foundation has been working in slum communities in Pune from 1986. It was observed that poverty, illiteracy and lack of awareness of basic health, hygiene and nutrition issues contributed to a poor quality of life. To address these problems and to build the capacity of the community, Snehdeep has been conducting several projects. Sponsorship Project started from 1990 with community poor and needy children. It was observed that many children were not able to pursue education. As the parents were not able to afford the fees. In some cases the scholastic performance of the students was poor because of the inability to pay for extra coaching classes. To fill this gap in the educational process, the Sponsorship project was started with the objective of providing assistance and support to needy and deserving children to continue their education. Most of the beneficiaries are widows, single parents and needy family children.
The Malnutrition Program
The nutritional status of under-five children in urban slums is an important health indicator for assessing the health status of the entire population. Malnutrition is one of the most important public health problems globally. Malnutrition may affect the physical and mental development of children along with high morbidity. Children with severe acute malnutrition have a 5-20 times higher risk of mortality due to infectious diseases like diarrhea or pneumonia According to World Health Organisation, around 1.1 billion people globally do not have access to improved water supply sources whereas 2.4 billion people do not have access to any type of improved sanitation facility. About 2 million people die every year due to diarrhoeal diseases, most of them are children less than 5 years of age. The most affected are the population in developing countries, living in extreme conditions of poverty, normally peri-urban dwellers or rural inhabitants. Among the main problems which are responsible for this situation are: lack of priority given to the sector, lack of financial resources, lack of sustainability of water supply and sanitation services, poor hygiene behaviour, and inadequate sanitation in public places including hospitals, health centers, and schools. Providing access to sufficient quantities of safe water, provision facilities for sanitary disposal of excreta, and introducing sound hygiene behaviour are of capital importance to reduce the burden of disease caused by these risk factors.
